Curtin Primary School - Not currently participating

Curtin Primary School is located in the suburb of Curtin within Canberra, Australia’s National Capital (ACT). It was established in 1983 following the amalgamation of North and South Primary Schools. Since this time, the school has been associated with two other reshaping exercises, culminating in the closure of the Curtin North Building and returning to the South Curtin site in Term 1, 1991. Enrolments have increased considerably over the last five years and currently stand at 395. Due to reductions in K to Year 3 class sizes we will have a reduced enrolment of 375 in 2004.
The philosophy and goals of the school were developed in consultation with parents, teachers and students. At Curtin, emphasis is placed on creating a learning environment that is rich academically and socially. We are committed to quality, and endeavour to allocate resources to meet a wide range of changing needs in education. We are very proud of our successes in outside competitions such as the ACT Science Fair and the University of NSW Maths, Science and Computer Competitions. Much attention has been given to ICT recently. All classrooms have networked and stand?alone computers with CD ROM capacity connected to the Internet. We have established an excellent computer lab. We have also installed two smartboards and intend to install more in coming years.
Curtin Primary School prides itself on catering for the special needs of students. Each year we review the wide range of educational needs students have and provide opportunities to meet these needs. Catering for gifted and talented students is a feature of Curtin Primary School. In 1997 classes K/6 were established to cater for these student needs. The Pathways for Accelerated Leamers (PALS) Program provides opportunities for individuals as well as those in the specialised classes. Curtin is an area school for Special Education. Students are supported professionally by a Special Education teacher and a teacher’s assistant. Our integrated resource model has worked well with significant outcomes for those in the program.
A sense of belonging to a school community is considered important for all who are associated with the school. Parent participation is welcomed in many ways at Curtin. Educating children is the responsibility of parents and teachers and is best achieved through open communication and a working partnership.
